Interesting fact, a couple of years ago, Monterrey was named the safest big city in all the americas (yes including the usa and canada), and mexico city the worst and least safest! So there you go , you can get all in mexico!

CIZA, it about time you start sharing the wealth of info you must be accumulating in Mexico!

I happen to be in the safest city and also the one with the lowest unemployment of Colombia! Can you guess which that is???

Those of you who know where I am are excluded!
I am going to guess Bogota? Only a guess....

Driving into Mexico is not a problem. However, once you get past so many kilometers you will need a special sticker which you will need to pick up at the Mexican counselate(this just doesn't look correct). It should cost around $40 dollars. You will need copies of your passport, drivers license, owner's slip for the car. It is a good idea to get insurance online. You can get it at the border if your spanish is good enough, but it will be more expensive. It should cost around $400 per year but will probably be higher for short periods. Your US coverage ends at the border. About 100kilos into mexico you will go through another checkpoint where they will look for your sticker. Place it on windshield just to the left of your rearview mirror.

Monterrey, I am told is more like an american city and quite fun. I only drove through at night, but it was cool since it is built up the sides of some mountains. The people of Monterrey have a reputation of being cheap. I am just repeating what I heard. I can not independently confirm or deny. There are a lot of expats there and there is know to be narco problems. However, they seem not to bother those who do not bother them. Cannot say the same for key border towns.

I don't know how much you are planning on driving but after Monterrey there are many small and large cities that each have unique characteristics. It will take around 12 hours to get to Mexico City, but only around 3 to Monterrey from Reynosa. Maybe less since the speed limit is 200 Pesos. I have heard it is best to buy a garmins in Mexico. That the ones in the states miss the constant changes that seem to occur in the Mexican road systems. When possible take the toll ways instead of the free equivalent. You can go faster, it is smoother and straighter and less chance of people crossing the road in front of you. I recommed Guia Roji guides. They specialize in Mexico and will be accurate if it is new. Best thing I ever bought.
Thanks for sharing with us.

.

However, the natural beauty of the country lies to the south. If anyone saw Apocalypto, that was filmed somewhere near Oaxaca.

Apocalyto was filmed in the state of Vera Cruz. Nothing to do with Oaxaca climate wise.

The import sticker for the car can be had at the Aduana or customs not at the consulate.
I understand you can get it on the internet but I have never tried.
You must post a bond for your car.You can leave your credit card inprint and get it back when you check the car out.
If you do not have a credit card in your name you can pay cash. Last time I did it was 400 US dollars that you will get back when you leave.
The import permit is valid as long as your visa or tourist card is valid if you post the bond with your credit card. If you pay cash you must go back to the border within 6 months to get the money.
It is very import to have them take the stickers out of the computer when you leave the country or you will have problems when you want to reenter with the car.
I have friends who werer told at the border they did not need a sticker because you do not need one if you stay in a certain zone at the border, they found out when they got to Guaymas, they needed a sticker and had to go back to the border to get it. Do not get lazy get it at the border.
You do not need to speak Spansih to get it.

Another tip on the toll roads. Keep the receipts, if you have an accident caused by negligence, like metal or rocks left on the road the CAPUFE which is in charge of the road is insurred and will pay to get your car fixed. The first thing they will ask for is the receipt of the toll. They have "green angels" that patrol the toll roads and will show up eventually to help you.
They have the emergency phone numbers posted on the side of the highways.
Have water and umbrelas or hat we got stuck on the side of the road in the State of Vera Cruz and it is mighty hot while waiting.

Mexican Insurrance is a must! You must get legal aid included, that is the most important part of the insurrance. If you are caught in an accident where people are hurt the legal aid will post bond for you and keep you out of jail. If you do not have legal aid everyone goes to jail until the police figures out who is the guilty party.

In the little town where I live an old lady was blocked from going into her car on the driver side as a car parked too close .. Her friend another old lady helped her by climbing in the car and taking the car out of a tight spot. The woman driving was confused and the car jerked backwards and then launched forwards killing the owner of the car on the sidewalk and injuring another friend. The car had US plates which means that only the owner was insurred, the friend was not covered and she ended up in jail until the children of the old lady came and dropped charges and the owners of the cars she damaged dropped charges.
The old lady was not covered by the owner legal aid insurrance.
